In the oppressive heat of the Mississippi Delta, emotions also soar to high temperatures. Big Daddy has just received the news that he is not dying of cancer, and takes the opportunity of his birthday party to tell a few "home truths" to some relatives and acquaintances he believes have been lining up for his inheritance.
Big Daddy has worked his way from a "redneck" labourer in the cotton fields to being the owner of the plantation, and is not known for mincing words. Big Mamma has been taking some of the load off his shoulders as his supposed illness develops, and eldest son Gooper has been looking after the legalities. It is perhaps not surprising that Big Daddy steps in to re-establish his control.
Meantime, favourite son Brick and his wife Maggie (the cat) have failed to produce a child, and Brick's position as heir apparent is looking shaky, especially since Brick has taken to the bottle, and there have been rumours concerning his sexuality. These rumours have largely been spread by Gooper's wife Mae, who has been particularly successful in perpetuating the family name, with a string of "no neck monsters", and would like to see Gooper have control of the family fortunes.
On this one night, deeply buried secrets claw their way to the surface - allowing life, in whatever fashion, to go on.
Brisbane audiences will have no difficulty in understanding the effects of oppressive, sultry heat given our recent weather, but will have to use their imaginations when viewing the performance, since the theatre is air-conditioned.
