Director's notes

While working on this play and re-reading the book I have concentrated on the characters that make up the Gatsby world and what sort of parties would a mysterious Millionaire throw for his would be friends. I re-imagined Myrtle Wilson for this production as a South American immigrant impatiently wanting to succeed and to make NYC her home like the millions of others have done before her well before the 1920’s up until today. Another opposite characteristic Myrtle has to Daisy that makes the hypocrisy of Tom’s racism and another angle on a failed American dream. Brushing with Gatsby through life when a 1920’s party had me wonder the opulent clothes Gatsby people wore. The 2013 movie left me pondering the significance of green light a dream so close but never attainable. There have been 5 films made with memorable Gatsby’s from the 1926 silent version starring Warner Baxter, followed by Alan Ladd (1949), Robert Redford (1974), Toby Stephens (2000) and the latest Leonardo DiCaprio (2013). Roughly 12 months ago the Gatsby classic got reinvented again into a Broadway musical. All these tributes acclaim to the amazing staying power of this storyline and I hope that this production will give our audiences moments that will continue to linger in their thoughts.
