Directors' Notes

Almost, Maine is a play I stumbled across at the end of last year. I had never really heard of it before, but the more I read, the more I knew it was a show I wanted to direct—and one I would love to watch as someone who cares deeply about theatre.
In many ways, the play feels like an American version of Love Actually, weaving together a collection of awkward, beautiful, messy, and passionate experiences of love. What makes this play so special is that it shows us the real side of something we all want—and something most of us have experienced. Not just the sweet, magical moments, but also the heartbreaking and uncomfortable ones. There’s something deeply human about that honesty, and it’s what made me want to bring this story to life.

When casting this play, I looked for people who could bring those experiences to the stage—actors who could capture those emotions and bring pieces of themselves into their performances. The cast you’ll see tonight does exactly that in such a genuine and beautiful way.

This show would not have been possible without the incredible people who supported me along the way. I had the absolute privilege of directing this show alongside one of my oldest friends, Ella Uhlmann—something we’ve dreamed of doing since we were preteens. Our amazing set design and construction team, led by Lucy Moxon, brought my somewhat chaotic vision to life, creating this little town on the other side of the world.
A huge thank you to our sound and lighting designers and operators, Ayden McCarthy and Elijah Stone, for taking on the impossible task of capturing the grandeur of the Northern Lights and confining them within the walls of a theatre. Thank you as well to Jacqueline Kerr for her work as our casting liaison and for guiding me through the technical side of directing for the first time. And finally, to my friends, family, and my partner—thank you for your constant encouragement and support.
