Director's notes

It has been an absolute pleasure to bring you this wonderful play by Oscar Wilde.

Mr Wilde’s script is so well crafted and , in parts so well known, that it has been a challenge to approach it with a fresh perspective. But we have tried to uncover the deeper levels of his characters and to present their emotions in a realistic way.

This is a very physical production , we have accompanied the verbal sparring in the text with some actual sparring between the protagonists. It is amazing how much passion, animosity and jealousy can be expressed over a tea cake, or the lack of cucumber sandwiches.

This is a story about truth and lies, and the little lies that we tell to “get on”, or to “fit in”.

Both men win the affections of their fiancées by pretending to be someone else. Can their passion survive the unmasking!
